The Potomac River above Great Falls, November 2007. Pennyfield Lock is at mile 20 of the C&O Canal. The boat launch is a degraded ramp into barely enough water to float a paddle boat. At launch, you immediately enter a tunnel under the C&O Canal, with water dripping from the canal above. A few hundred meters of narrow stream leads to the open Potomac River. In November, the river was running crystal clear wth 2-3 mph current. This is a spectacularly beautiful stretch of the river.
