The red pandas in this gallery were photographed at the Smithsonian National Zoo's newly opened (October 2006) Asia Trail.

These beautiful creatures of the temperate forests of the Himalayas, southern China, and parts of India and Nepal share part of their natural habitat with the Giant Pandas.

Originally classified in the raccoon family, which it somewhat resembles, and later in the bear family, it is now classifed as the sole member of its own family, Ailuridae.

Red pandas are endangered, primarily due to habitat destruction. According to the Smithsonian, only about 2,500 adult red pandas remain in the wild.
